Buteyko Belt from buteykoclinic.com Buteyko International

The Buteyko Belt helps a person to be more aware consciously about own breathing. Since most people know that breathing ought to be diaphragmatic, this awareness about own breathing encourages and probably even automatically programs the body to have predominantly diaphragmatic rather than chest or thoracic breathing in those Buteyko students who is transitioning from automatic (or unconscious) chest or mixed breathing to diaphragmatic breathing 24/7.

A similar additional effect takes place in relation to reducing the respiratory minute volume or minute ventilation of the student due to conscious and subconscious effects in those students who deeply absorbed facts from medical sources, laws of respiratory physiology, and basics of the Buteyko Method and breathing retraining related to tremendous health benefits of slower and easier breathing 24/7. Thus, having a clear intent behind using the belt helps a person to achieve better effects while using the Buteyko Belt.

The belt may also have some slight direct mechanical effects on reduction of ventilation and raising alveolar CO2 to reduce existing hyperventilation. This can be especially beneficial during sleep to reduce early morning hyperventilation.

Thus, the belt can be a very useful tool in the process of breathing retraining.

In order to have a stronger effect on the morning CP (or to prevent over-breathing during sleep) due to a mechanical restriction of ventilation, the belt should be several times tighter and be non-stretchable.
