The Buteyko breathing retraining technique and other breath methods can improve one's health only if they make one's breathing pattern lighter and slower. Then the students also improve body oxygenation, which is measured using the CP test. Hence, the personal goal is to achieve a slow and shallow breathing pattern manifested in high CP test results.
In relation to life style factors, the Buteyko method is the most advanced technique, only Hatha Yoga comes close. In relation to breathing exercises, the Buteyko method produces best results for high CP students.
When the body oxygenation index is below 30 s, most students achieve fastest CP progress when using the Frolov resperation training device or the DIY breathing device. While there are now hundreds of MDs in Russia, who promote or endorse the Frolov device, very few of them understand importance of life style factors.
Hence, the optimum breathing retraining program for a typical student with a chronic disease (less than 20 s for the morning CP) include breath work with a breathing device and adherence to healthy lifestyle factors. More information and comparison between various breathing retraining techniques, their typical effects after 1 and 2 months of breath work and final success rates can be found on the webpage devoted to the DIY breathing device e-book.
