Breathing education
Part 2-G.
How efficient are our lungs in
oxygen extraction?
Chronic hyperventilators (e.g., with CPs
from 15 to 25 s) use only about 10-20% of inhaled oxygen at rest, the
remaining 80-90% O2 is exhaled!
- People considered normal by medical
standards retain only about a quarter (25%) of the oxygen that they inhale.
Their lungs are more efficient at extracting oxygen.
-
- Those healthy people, who breathe little
(4 l/min or less), can extract up to 50% or more of the oxygen they inhale.
In addition, they inhale much fewer toxic fumes, dust particles, pollens,
and other dangerous substances. This is another reason to breathe less.
